Day 23 – New Orleans, LA
Peace and blessings to All. This is Hamza Abdullah checking in for the Abdullah Brothers Ramadan Tour. It’s always amazing experiencing some of the cities that we have played in. When we fly into these cities for games, it is a business trip. There is no time for sight seeing, shopping or leisure activities. As we arrived in Louisiana, all I could think about was fried fish. My mouth had been watering since we put New Orleans on our tour. We arrived just before Iftar (The breaking of the Fast meal), so we were right on time for our seafood. I ordered the seafood platter, and it did not disappoint. The oysters and shrimp made me think about moving down here. I love seafood. I need to bring my wife out here, so we can go on a “Seafood Restaurant Tour”. I also have to take her to Cafe Du Monde and get those world famous Beignets. New Orleans was a real treat.
We arrived at the Islamic Center of New Orleans, and as anticipated the “OverZealousUncle” was the first one to greet us. Husain and I love all the characters we’ve met on our trip, and OZU, is one of them. They throw their kid at you and just start snapping pictures. Husain had to physically swim move one of the kids. LOL. I’m like dude, you didn’t even give us the greetings yet. We like to do all that stuff after we talk, and it’s more organized. But you have to know who you’re dealing with. He’s overzealous. We laugh about it, but it’s really no harm. We put ourselves in the shoes of the brothers. I know if Hakeem Olajuwon would have come to my Mosque, I would do more than throw kids. LOL.
As is the custom now, we have great hosts, and we meet great people. We met a group of Med School students that inspired me. These were good looking brothers, athletic and young. They basically started a Masjid in their place of residence. How impressive is that? They were humble brothers, who had a heart for helping. I let them know, that they are role models for youth as well as people like me. I aspire to continue my education, and have the opportunity to help others. The topic of marriage came up, and they were intrigued. Young professionals need loving too. So the next time someone asks me do you know anyone, I’ll say “I know a whole wolfpack”.
Marriage is beautiful, and there is a reason it is looked at, as half of our religion. It’s a union recognized in the eyes of God. We as a society need to promote this. Not the wedding, but the actual marriage. Marriage is not easy, but if we came together to support each other, it would make it easier. Alhamdulillah (All praises are due to God) most of my brothers are married, and I count on them for guidance and support. I realized I can’t do anything alone. I first need to call on God, then secondly on my brother. As brothers and sisters, we need to promote and enjoin Marriage on each other. God willing, It will make us more responsible, and we can achieve a nearness to God. Most parents want us to find a Doctor or Lawyer, who’s from the same hood we’re from, and he has to have 10,000 followers on twitter. The truth of the matter is, that person ain’t there. And he’s not walking through that door.
Sometimes we focus on things that have no substance. If a man is God fearing, he loves his parents, works hard at what he does, and is good with kids, he’s probably a good candidate. I’m selfish, and I want everyone to get married so I can have more friends. I can’t hang with single guys. Our priorities and responsibilities are different. Please get married, so I can bring my family to your house and we can chill and watch the Lakers win the championship. Yep. I went there. Seriously, promote marriage, and be genuinely happy for those who are married. And for those who are going through tough times, give them a hand, a shoulder or even just a good word. It is much appreciated.
Ayah (Verse) of the day comes from the Quran, Surah (Chapter) 7 Al-Araf (The Heights) Ayah 189:
“It is He who created you from a single person, and made his mate of like nature, in order that he might dwell with her (in love).
How beautiful is that verse? I pray we all get to dwell with our spouses in love. (S/O to my mate,I love you sweetheart). I thank you for spending time with me during our tour. God willing, we can continue to promote good, and promote marriage. We are on our way to Houston, TX. Please keep us in your prayers. Thank you again. Peace and Be Blessed.
